[For Sarah Maria, “Poppi’s Little Girl...”]
Story Behind the Song -
In the iconic style of the 12-bar blues, this up-tempo number tells of the special relationship between a dad and a daughter. Sarah, who’s had me wrapped around her little finger since Day One, still holds that special soft spot in my heart in her 30’s. (And Poppi don’t mind at all.) If you’re a father of a daughter, you’ve lived out this song a few times.
Song Lyrics -
Baby, don’t you give me those puppy dog-eyed blues.
Baby, don’t you give me those puppy dog-eyed blues.
‘Cause if you ask me for some dough, you know I can’t refuse—
So, baby, don’t you give me those puppy dog-eyed blues.
Well, your bottom lip has just begun to pout,
And I know too well just what that’s all about.
You want to go out shopping, but you got no green,
So, you come to me, and gimme that look — like I’m a cash machine!
Now, you call me “Poppi” with a singsong in your voice.
Then you gimme a hug, and now I got no choice...
You’ve got me wrapped around your finger, little girl—
But you’ve gone from little Barbie dolls to SUVs and pearls!
